Well, it appears everyone has flown north – we haven’t had a data transmission from one of our tagged owls since Fulgence did so on April 10 and Emblème on April 8. There’s always a chance one of them will send up a flare from some small bush outpost with cell service, but I suspect we’re finished for the season.

We never got anything further from Perth, but after discussions with the engineers at CTT, our feeling is she’s fine, but a couple of the sensors in her transmitter went offline for unknown reasons. Given that we received GPS data from her after that failure event, and that the sensors for things like altitude and speed were still working (and still showing movement), we’re cautiously optimistic that when she comes south next winter we’ll hear from her again, though we can’t be certain there weren’t more serious glitches in the device.

If there’s interesting snowy owl news in the months ahead you may hear from us, but otherwise we’ll be back to you in late autumn as we start gearing up for another winter.
