Newton is an after-fourth-year adult male snowy owl, tagged Jan. 11, 2023, near the village of Newton, ON, by banders Charlotte England and Malcolm Wilson. He migrated north in March 2023, summering in the Ungava Peninsula of Québec where it appears he nested. He remained in the north until early January 2024, when he moved more than 1,300 km (800 miles) south. He wintered in Ontario northwest of Lake Timiskaming, close to the Québec border, leaving March 27, 2024, to migrate north. Newton spent the summer of 2024 in the northern Ungava Peninsula where, based on his tracking data, it appears he was not tending a nest. He started migrating south Nov. 1, 2024, and arrived on the Bruce Peninsula below Georgian Bay in Ontario by Dec. 10, 2024.
Newton’s transmitter was paid for by generous donations from the public to Project SNOWstorm.
We are raising $15,000 this year for Snowy Owl research.
We're continuing our work this winter, learning more about these majestic Arctic predators, but we can't do it without your help. Your donation to Project SNOWstorm is tax-deductible through our institutional home, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Pennsylvania, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
