Atwood is an adult female at least four years old, tagged Feb. 25, 2024, near Atwood, ON, by Charlotte England and Malcolm Wilson. Atwood’s transmitter was paid for by generous donations from the public to Project SNOWstorm. Because of unusual photographer activity in Atwood’s area, and out of an abundance of caution, we initially did not publish her tracking map, only doing so when she began to migrate north. She summered in the central Canadian Arctic but appears not to have nested in 2024, returning south to the same area where she had been tagged in December 2024. Please see our suggestions on the ethics of viewing and photographing snowy owls. Atwood began migrating north in March 2025, and last checked in March 23, 2025, from the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula. She lingered very far north into the winter of 2025-26, not coming south into Ontario until Jan. 27, 2026, one of the latest arrivals of Project SNOWstorm.
We are raising $15,000 this year for Snowy Owl research.
We're continuing our work this winter, learning more about these majestic Arctic predators, but we can't do it without your help. Your donation to Project SNOWstorm is tax-deductible through our institutional home, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Pennsylvania, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
